American Airlines Fined $1.6 Million
On Wednesday, the U.S. Transportation Department fined American Airlines $1.6 million for violating a rule that prohibits long tarmac delays. According to the department, a new report found that the airline had allowed a number of domestic flights in the U.S. to sit on an airport tarmac for at least three hours or more without giving passengers an opportunity to leave the plane. The fine matches the same amount that was given to Southwest Airlines in 2015 for violating the same rule. Despite the fine, American Airlines spokesman Matt Miller said on Wednesday that the company was pleased to have resolved the issue.
